3rd April - 12th April 2011
Trekking to Machu Picchu in Peru via the Lares Trail is an incredible adventure, packed with breathtaking scenery and majestic landscapes. The beautiful and remote Lares Trek will lead you to the mysterious Machu Picchu ruins, giving you a unique opportunity to experience a relatively unexplored part of mystical Peru. It is a spectacular journey through forgotten wind-swept valleys, over wild snowcapped mountain passes and through tiny isolated Andean villages.
See the wonder of Peru unfold before you and experience, first-hand, the vibrant native communities and indigenous cultures that have remained untouched for centuries. The trek to Machu Picchu begins in the historic seat of the Inca civilization, the city of Cusco (11,000 feet). You will be given opportunity to explore this ancient city before the group head to the ruins above Cusco, known as Saksayhuaman. At Saksayhuaman, you will see stone blocks 8.5 meters high, weighing more than 361 tons. It has been said that these ruins are one of the most astounding megalithic structures of the ancient world; however, these ruins are a fascinating preview of what you will see at Machu Picchu! The Lares Valley Trek is a 10 day challenge, of which 5 days will be spent trekking.
The group will fly from Glasgow to Lima before transferring to Cusco for the start of the adventure. The group will be accompanied, at all times, by a doctor and experienced guides who will provide advice on safety, whilst also sharing their knowledge of the trail. The trek will be challenging at times and participants will require a reasonable level of fitness. St. Andrew's Hospice will organise some practice walks and climbs to assist your training programme.
