(Scottish Higher Education Levels 3) – (SQCF Level 9)
This module is designed to equip the practitioner with a sound knowledge of the various causes of pain in patients with cancer and to furnish him/her with the skills to assess and effectively manage pain within a team. The whole spectrum of cancer pain from nociceptive pain through to total pain will be explored. Topics will include: the nature of cancer pain, the nursing role in providing holistic care, clinical assessment, role of opioid analgesia, adjuvant analgesic treatments, spinals and epidurals for cancer pain management, when to use a syringe driver, total pain and how to recognise it and oncological treatments for the relief of pain including Shared Decision Making within the context of Realistic Medicine and Anticipatory Care Planning.
