I’m Sister Catherine Egan and I have the honour of inviting you and your family to be part of a very special celebration event at St Andrew’s Hospice this summer – Thanksgiving Thistles.

We are delighted to invite you to take part in our first summer celebration of life event in two important ways:

Firstly, we invite you to dedicate a Thanksgiving Thistle dedicated to your loved one. Each name will be inscribed on a thistle which will be planted in a beautiful display at our Hospice. Our hope is to create a display of many hundreds (perhaps even thousands) of thistles, all coming together to create a beautiful, vibrant scene.

We would also like to invite you and your family and friends to attend a thanksgiving service outside St Andrew’s Hospice on Thursday 19 August at 7pm.

Sr. Catherine Egan, Director of Mission, St Andrew’s Hospice .

The event will bring together all members of our Hospice family for a warm celebration of those who have died. After the service, you will be invited to come and collect your dedicated Thistle from the display and take it home to keep. The service will also be live streamed online for anyone who cannot attend.

Please complete our online form, telling us the name (or names) of those people to whom you wish to dedicate a Thanksgiving Thistle. We would also be grateful if you could let us know if you and others are considering attending the event, to help us plan safely. Please note: Numbers attending the thanksgiving service may be capped depending on COVID restrictions at the time.

Thanksgiving Thistles, and the event, are offered to all completely free, but if you feel able to contribute to St Andrew’s , I and everyone here would be so grateful to you. You can make a donation here.

  • £10.02 could pay for a day’s worth of meals for a patient like John in our Inpatient Unit
  • £20.45 could provide complementary therapy relaxation oils for two patients attending our Wellbeing Support Services
  • £42.68 could pay for six Children’s Support Workbooks to support young people through their loss of someone precious
  • £101.20 could meet the costs of specialist nurse call systems for patients who have reduced upper limb function

There’s almost certainly someone special you’re already thinking of dedicating a Thanksgiving Thistle to.
Just let us know their name and we’ll make sure they’re a part of our display. I hope we have the pleasure of seeing
you and your loved ones at the service in August.
